Folks, those of us who do this, do not do it as a public service (although it may seem so, even to us, when we reconcile our bank statements). It’s almost impossible to make a living—I’m purposely omitting the word decent—from the monies we get from selling things the first time around. To have any hope of staying afloat, we have to wring maximum value out of each and every word we write, and that means asking for (and expecting) a decent return on our writing investment in each and every case.
