I’m very sad to see this post.

I spent an afternoon with Harlan Ellison when he came to speak at the University I was attending. The afternoon session was an informal one organized for students in the writing program, but it was open to anyone on campus to attend. What a wonderful chance to learn from and ask questions from such a master.

That was in the mid-late ’80s. I don’t remember the exact year. I do remember the strong impression he made on me. I wasn’t familiar with much of his work then but was keen to discover it following that day.

Of course, I was just another face in the crowd, but he did seem to be surprised later when, after his public lecture that evening, as I waited in the line of people wanting his autograph, instead of asking him to sign a piece of paper, I used my few seconds of his time to tell him how much I had enjoyed the afternoon session and what it meant to me.
