Samsung Galaxy Tab Aldiko Experiment

Bill Miranda got a Samsung Galaxy Tab this week.

As usual, this called for a Science Experiment!

He installed Aldiko 2.0 and I sent him the standard test ePub again. He sent back screensnaps with this report:

Page turn animation doesn’t work though turned on. Pages slide. Response good at reading speed but you sometimes get a second of “loading” if scrolling through pages at rapid clip. It isn’t iBooks beautiful but certainly functional.

He provided screensnaps (a built-in feature of the GTab):

Click = big

Click = big

Click = big

I have used this test ePub — a biography of Michael Jackson — as the basis for two other Science Experiments:

Barnes & Noble Nook Vs. Archos 5 Internet Tablet: Round Two
IDPF Screws Up ePub eBook Covers For Everyone!

Two things are very significant here.

1) The cover thumbnail appears in Aldiko 2.0 now. It didn’t in the prior version!

2) The cover is oddly cut off on the right side. That did not happen in the prior version of Aldiko.

And this is weird, too. The Galaxy Tab has a screen resolution of 1024 x 600. And these are the dimensions of the cover JPEG:

I’m not even going to attempt the math on this. I’d just embarrass myself. But something isn’t scaling properly. I wonder if similar problems would happen with over ePub covers? Aldiko can chime in with a Comment about this.

Otherwise, this all looks very good. As for PageCurl animation not working, for me that’s a plus. I hate PageCurl! As for the “Loading” 1-second pause, that’s standard when switching from one Chapter file to the next with Aldiko when paging through a book very, very quickly.

Writer Steve Mosby is also happy with his GTab:

Personally, I’d still go for a NookColor over a GTab, because I’d root the NookColor and it would better suit my needs at a good price point. But it’s clear that people are loving their GTab.

  1. I’d guess the cover is being clipped on the right side because it’s being forced to fit the screen vertically.

    Just a thought.
