Nook Touch Rooting: June 13th News

Note: All Nook Touch rooting news of this day will be consolidated into this single post, with any updates at the end.

Update June 13, 2011: See end of post for new apps confirmed working — and which do not.

Hurrah! The Kindle for Android app running on a rooted Nook Touch will sync to your Amazon cloud library! In fact:

It does exactly what the android app does.

So, a rooted Nook Touch becomes a sort of Kindle (sort of, in that there’s the page-slide animation instead of simple page refresh).

What apps have people installed? See a photo after the break!

This photo from a member at the XDA Developers forum says a lot:

Click = ginormous

According to one XDA member, apks can be added following these NookColor instructions.

Another XDA member points to the NookColor superuser instructions also working on the Nook Touch.

And here are the Nook Touch CPU details from another XDA member:

cat /proc/cpuinfo
Processor : ARMv7 Processor rev 2 (v7l)
BogoMIPS : 597.64
Features : swp half thumb fastmult vfp edsp neon vfpv3
CPU implementer : 0x41
CPU architecture: 7
CPU variant : 0x3
CPU part : 0xc08
CPU revision : 2

Hardware : OMAP3621 GOSSAMER board
Revision : 0005
Serial : 3012250037563007

That’s the same CPU as the NookColor. Speed!

And from the XDA member whose photo opened this post, comes word of how much RAM there is:

I think it has 228 useable ram, and 789 program memory

Edit: my ram used was at 200 before I cleared it out. That’s probably gonna be an issue for heavy use

That’s 200/228 megabytes and 789 megabytes.

Everyone still awaits an easy method for rooting and Android program installation.

Update June 13, 2011: From another XDA Developers member comes this list of apps that work/don’t work:

And from another XDA Developers member, comes this photo of GMail working:

  1. Thanks for keeping everyone up to date with daily updates! I’ve rooted my Nook Touch (blog post coming eventually), and I didn’t agree with some of the placement of apps on your working/non-working list. Dolphin Browser is working fine for me- not perfect, but no show-stopping problems. On the other side, Instafetch is not working for me. I was able to install it and sync it fine, but it is unable to open any articles (the screen flashes, but stays on the Unread article list).

Not my list. I was quoting. And he said Dolphin HD — isn’t that different than the regular Dolphin browser? When you do a post, leave a Comment with a link so I can go see!

      • My post is up (http://blog.tophernet.com/2011/06/new-toy-rooting-nook-touch.html)! I have the feeling yours are much more helpful though.

I would love to have a discussion with the XDA poster who got Instafetch working, but apparently I need a certain number of posts in other areas of the forum before I can participate in the section where the Nook discussion is. I understand having a bar, but I don’t want to go make useless posts just to reach that limit.

You’re right about Dolphin Browser; I’m running non-HD. I couldn’t figure out the difference, and I guessed (apparently correctly) that the normal one had a better chance of working. Is the HD one newer, just prettier, or what?

I think the HD version is for HD screens (like NookColor and many 10″ screens). Your Comment got trapped in spam again. You see I already found your post via Search this morning — the 15th — when I was looking for more rooting news.

Hey, I rooted my nook touch, but the gmail account didn’t sync. Can anyone show me how to do that? I signed into youtube and had hit refresh in the gmail menu but still no luck :(
    Please help!
