We’re all still waiting for a rooting method as easy as that for the NookColor. No developments on that yet.

This post confirms that the eInk refresh buffering does not carry over to other reading apps installed via rooting:
Yeah, I have to tap the screen in order to turn pages in Aldiko. It seems as the flashing effect you get every 5th page with the native Nook app occurs every page turn with Aldiko. Sort of a weird effect, but I can probably get used to it.
It’s odd, but many people who were otherwise not interested in eInk devices are buying a Nook Touch because it can be rooted. Their obvious surprise at how eInk functions reveals this.
