The Eternal Techmeme Circle Jerk

Ah, Techmeme!

Despite the fact that video has been making the rounds for weeks and even I have used bits of it (here and here and, significantly, here), only today does it hit Techmeme’s Radar of Circle Jerking.

And it’s not linking to the blog that originally popularized it, either!

So given that site’s propensity for never linking to original sources (they get buried under the laughable “Discussion” tag, if they are ever acknowledged at all), I guess I can expect my post of today to wind up in some Circle Jerker’s blog anywhere from a week to three months from now and then be showcased on Techmeme, as if it never, ever happened anywhere else ever before.

Because that’s how this shitty little rigged game operates.

It’s Time To Dump Adobe eBook DRM

Do any of you understand the contortions two of the major eBook players undergo in order to avoid Adobe DRM?

Kobo’s eReader does not download an ePub file to the device. It downloads a file into an SQLite database.

Barnes & Noble’s Nook devices hide the eBook partition from the user. It cannot be seen by plugging into a PC.

Why do these two companies do this?

Photo: Kobo Touch Versus Nook Touch

Click = big

Man, that Nook is just so fugly next to that Kobo.

Photo is from here. Even though he won’t let people use the Flickr Blog Publish feature, he still allows downloading. So, downloading to me = go ahead and embed anyway.

Kindle 3 In The Wild

Photo taken today, Saturday June 25, 2011:

Blurtastic surreptitious photo taken at an ungodly hour this morning at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

When I first noticed it, I thought he had an LCD device. The damn screen was glowing. Plus, from the angle and the case he had it in, plus that glowing screen, it didn’t look like a Kindle 3. Later I saw it from another angle and it was a Kindle 3. Hell of a thing, how the angle of the light made the screen look like it was a glowing LCD.
