Superstorm Sandy: Before And After

Sometimes coincidence works out.

Here are two images. The top was taken October 29th. The second after Superstorm Sandy, on the morning of the 30th.

These have been cropped from two separate larger photos to make them align as much as possible. They are otherwise unchanged from the original digital photos.

These are full-size images for those of you with Retina-class screens and very large monitors. You can navigate around them in a way I can’t with my crappy desktop. Click or tap to enlarge.

And that’s just a hint of what’s to come in future posts.

Standby Some More

Sent to me by writer Jimmy Lee Shreeve:

‘Sons of Anarchy’ star: Storm aftermath ‘a lot worse than how it’s being portrayed by media’

It’s so bad here, a lot worse than how its being portrayed by the media.

Having been without electricity and mostly even without daily newspapers, I wouldn’t know.

They are finding bodies left and right, elderly people who don’t even watch the news or who knew the storm was coming. I was just with one of my best friends from high school and college, and his house is completely gone. One story I heard was about this one guy who evacuated his house during Hurricane Irene but then it got looted. So when they told him to evacuate for Sandy, he said, ‘I’m not leaving.’ Now they can’t find him, his 13-year-old daughter is dead, and his wife is in critical condition at the hospital. These are the stories. My stepfather and my mother, I love them to death. But when they heard the storm was coming, they said, ‘It’s not going to be that bad. Irene didn’t do anything.’

Boldfaced emphasis added by me.

All of you fucks who hyped the hell out of Irene set us up for this shit.

You cried “Wolf!” and we don’t let you do that to us a second time.

I could go on about our miserable Marathon Man Mayor, our bullshitting Governor, our Let’s Take The Weekend Off local officials, the two goddammed negligent local all-news radio stations (both owned by one company, fuck you FCC and CBS Radio!), but everyone on this island now knows the truth.

In any future disaster, we’re on our own.

I’ll just shut the hell up now and let the future posts with pictures speak for themselves. And what I’ll be showing isn’t even from the worst areas, which I can’t get to. The posts should start going up tomorrow.
