It’s never a good sign when any tablet refuses to install the AnTuTu benchmark.
A seller has posted three videos of the Tomato T2 tablet. This is an iPad Mini clone with Samsung tablet styling, a 7.9-inch 1024 x 768 IPS screen, 1.8GHz octa-core Exynos 5410 CPU, 2GBs of RAM, 16 or 32GBs of storage, 3G via Huawei UltraStick, GPS, microSD card slot, USB 3.0, microphone, headphone jack, top-mounted dual speakers, 2MP front and 5MP back cameras. Specs are here.
I like that Tomato made the Home button blue. That’s a bit classy.
And their logo on the back is in color.
As you will see, it boots up fast.
Although it has a custom UI, those are just widgets and can be replaced. Unfortunately, the lack of a bottom iconbar and the placement of the Apps button seems to indicate that Tomato actually did some modifications to Android. That’s not good.
The main App screen, showing what’s installed. There’s the Google bits.
But something is wrong. It would not install either AnTuTu or the cheat-defeating AnTuTu X. And there’s no reason I could see in the video — the third one below — that it should have failed to do them. I really don’t want to think that Tomato has modified Android so that it will evade being benchmarked by AnTuTu. I’m hoping this was just a weird glitch.
This tablet is expensive. US$285. That’s just US$15 less than the Dell Venue 8 Pro running full Windows 8.1! Look at how fast things have changed in the market that a full Windows 8 tablet is now that inexpensive. This tablet is also about US$100 more than the usual quad-core iPad Mini clone. It’s very difficult to justify buying it. You must really want an Android tablet with the possibility of 3G (it’s still unclear if 3G is capable outside of China) — or want that CPU horsepower (which will be matched if not exceeded by the HP Slate 8 Pro with its Tegra 4 CPU).
Now the videos.
