Peter O’Toole, star of Lawrence of Arabia, dies aged 81
Lawrence of Arabia has been described as “history as it never was.”
But after reading a biography of T.E. Lawrence, I thought O’Toole captured him perfectly.

I saw the film with my parents in 1962, shortly after its release. My father was an aide to Allenby and was involved from Aqaba to Damascus. He did not like Lawrence, so his opinion of O’Toole’s acting was biased, but as he didn’t like O’Toole in the movie, I always assumed O’Toole was pretty accurate.
The actor who impressed father the most was Alec Guinness. At the intermission, father was wondering how Hollywood got Feisal’s son to play him in the movie and was stunned when mother and I explained it was Alec Guinness – after said he was pitch perfect, right down to the mannerisms and speech.
Wonderful recollections. Thanks.
