Imagine, just for a moment, that your Sony DVD player would only play Sony Movies’ films. When you decided to buy a new DVD player from Samsung, none of those media files would work on your new kit without some serious fiddling.
That’s the walled garden that so many companies are now trying to drag us into. And I think it stinks.
Openness and network effects are the biggest drivers of usage – an MP3 bought from Amazon works on an iPod bought from Apple, and an MP3 bought from iTunes works perfectly on a Kindle Fire bought from Amazon. Customers and businesses both win when open standards are embraced and lock-in is eschewed.
Samsung, you simply cannot think of everything. Harness the billions of brain out there in the world. Let the Gear Fit connect to everything. Produce an SDK. You will own our wrists.
