Five Technology: 3G And Rockchip 3288

And suddenly everything changes…

iFive3G001

Five Technology announces its intention to release a 3G tablet [Google Translate]. Aside from it having a Mali 400 GPU and a 7.9-inch 1024 x 768 screen, nothing else is known. It’s likely to use a MediaTek CPU for integrated 3G. This otherwise seems to be the original Mini 3 with new 3G guts.

But the biggest news is apparent in that illustration: The iFive Skin is gone! Is this the future for all of their tablets or is 3G a special case?

See previously: The 3G iFive Mini 3 That Never Was.

As if that wasn’t enough, Five also pimped its upcoming use of the new Rockchip 3288 CPU [Google Translate].

The text is standard pimping that I’ve seen before for the RK3288/Mali T764 GPU.

What’s interesting are these images:

iFiveRK328802

Although I shouldn’t read too much into PR images, there’s just one tablet Five Technology produces that looks like that: The Mini 3.

A Retina-class iFive Mini 3 with the new RK3288/T764 is what everyone was expecting. What they released instead was one based on the older 3188 CPU.

And those are new hype images. Compare: Five Technology To Use Rockchip 3288 First.

We won’t be seeing a 3288-based Mini 3 any time soon. See: Rockchip 3288-Based Tablets Months Away.

Aside from that, the current Retina-class 3188-based Mini 3 is still not actually released and still lacks a stable ROM for all of the early buyers. Gearing up a new ROM for the RK3288/T764 combo will similarly take more time.

So we can expect a Retina-class iFive Mini 3 with the new RK3288? Finally a Chinese tablet worth buying! I can’t wait anymore.

Maybe. Most people think it will first go to 9.7-inch tablets with Retina screens — as the AM802 did with Onda.

      • Thomas

Never considered a 9.7 before, wanted something smaller. But might leap if it has the rk3288.

We really don’t know anything about this CPU yet aside from the hype and counter-hype in Chinese forums. It could run hot and require a larger tablet. It’s interesting that the M802 hasn’t been put in any iPad Mini clone (yet?), Aside from the CPU/GPU combo, it’s up to each platform or tablet vendor to optimize Android. Onda has pushed out at least 4 updates for the M802-based V975M so far.

Ok. Thank you for collecting all relevant information about iFive mini 3 and putting it on your blog. It is a great resource of information in a single place. I find it useful.

The icons in the first image look like miui’s icons (http://en.miui.com). This could be either the miui Android variant (rom) or just the miui launcher on iFive’s rom.
