Power is a new series on the Starz cable TV channel.
Right after the first episode ran, it was renewed for a second season.
Episode spoilers after the break.
Run the long credits list …
It’s the opening night of a hot new nightclub called Truth …
… and the owner and his wife, Natasha, are arriving.
But he’s not just a businessman.
He’s one of the largest — if not the largest — drug distributors in New York City. And this night, he has a problem. One of his couriers was hit and the entire day’s earnings were stolen.
He has to get his hands dirty …
… to the full extent:
He’s known as “Ghost.” And has a rep.
His partner is Tommy …
… and they came up together on the streets.
But while Tommy is content with Da Life, Ghost has actual ambitions.
That puts him in conflict with his wife and with Tommy.
And that’s on top of having to figure out who the hell hit him, because his cartel supplier already knows about it and isn’t pleased.
The next night at his club, a woman he hasn’t seen for eighteen years re-enters his life:
She went on to make her own life, studying law.
She’s the one who got away.
His cartel supplier, meanwhile, is lining up another distributor …
… Tommy might be cheating him …
… his crew is still getting hit …
… and that girl he once loved?
She’s an attorney for the government …
… looking to take down the cartel supplier …
… and his distributor.
But neither the government nor she …
… knows who that distributor is.
It’s her past love. Ghost.
There wasn’t anything particularly special about this script other than neatly packing in all of the dynamics that set in motion the rest of the season. Directing was a bit wobbly too. I know they were shooting for the Miami Vice vibe pioneered by Michael Mann, but it was all surface and rough.
But it held my interest.
And New York City is getting a real beauty treatment as the series’ atmosphere:
The second episode just ran. I haven’t seen it yet. But I intend to. This series could be something.
