That should raise the blood pressure of mainstream publishers! Why buy a book when you can borrow a copy?

If this works the way I suspect Amazon wants it to, then there is no longer a business justification for a traditional publishing house, because the only people buying new books will be lending libraries (the plural there is somewhat optimistic).

Also interesting that Bezos has found a way to revive the $9.99 price point.

Well, Oyster and Scribd have been doing this — but this is AMAZON. Oyster at least will be dead. Scribd might hang on because of other factors.

I don’t see ala carte for this service, tho. They want to do a monthly charge to plastic. I’d like to use it as-needed. Buy a $10 Amazon Gift Card, have a one-month reading binge, then not pay for it again until I need it via Gift Card.

I think this is pretty typical Amazon. Start with something designed to get every publisher in existence panicked (a somewhat ‘lock-in’ service), then extend it once publishers start folding their tents.

Personally, I prefer the more random approach – I binge read for a few weeks, then back off for weeks and sometimes months.

Yep. That’s what I do too. Go on a reading spree, then stop for a while.

  2. It’s not a model that would work in the UK – we don’t do subscription buying very much.

  3. Funny, I thought Amazon already had a subscription eBook offer! That’s what I get from boycotting them.

As I think about it more, I wonder how Amazon intends to pay author royalties with this scheme.
