So is that a way in which they keep the retail price lower than competitors?

Insignia Flex Elite 7.85: Update “Soon,” OMA ROM Needs Windows 7

The uproar over Netflix not working with the Insignia Flex Elite 7.85 has caused Insignia Support to finally break silence at the Best Buy listing for the tablet:

In other news, Insignia claims to actually have a Support staff! Will such an update also include Stagefright and other recent vulnerability fixes? And an update to Android 5.x? And how about a one-button unlock/root method? And elimination of the damn bug that causes the screensnap icon to stop working?

Asus ZenPad S 8.0 (“Plus/Pro” Model) Gets Second Review

Asus ZenPad S 8.0 Review

There’s a lot to like with this tablet. It’s fast, looks nice, sounds amazing, and USB-C is clearly the way of the future. The software mess that is ZenUI is unfortunate, and the weirdly aggressive thermal regulation is a problem. While neither is a deal breaker on their own, combined it’s clear this is not a tablet for power users or heavy gamers.

One of the most important features to this particular tablet is the price tag. At $299 for the 64GB model, it’s hard to look at the majority of current generation of Android tablets — especially Google’s Nexus 9 — and see the value. Are rapid software updates and a clean UI worth the extra $180 for a tablet that has half the storage and no SD card slot? It’s hard to say yes.

A brief video is after the break.

Yet Another Serious Android Security Flaw

New Flaw Discovered Inside Android’s Mediaserver

The flaw affects all Android versions from 2.3 Gingerbread to 5.1.1 Lollipop, which adds up incredibly large number, as virtually all devices are included in this range, even if they are ROMs only based on Android, as the flaw is found inside one of the system’s core components. Fortunately, Google already pushed a fix for the issue to the Android Open Source Project on August 1, leaving it to the hands of OEMs to push the much-needed update to their flagship devices.

Boldfaced emphasis added by me.

With the Insignia Flex Elite 7.85 on sale — as well as other Best Buy Insignia-branded Android devices — you have to wonder if updates with security fixes will ever arrive for them.
