Nook Glowlight Plus Rooting Notes #8

At post time, still no:

1) Root

2) Photos of a Nook with apps

3) YouTube video demonstrating such apps

4) Tutorials for non-techies how to load apps via ADB

Even though The Digital Reader published a post called How to Install Apps on the Nook Glowlight Plus, it’s not step-by-step. Plus, prior Nooks required the Android SDK for full ADB and command prompt use, which isn’t even mentioned in the post.

Anyone else frustrated with the mediocre tablet market in the Android world?

With phones, people get excited, and they’re weighing the pros and cons of one flagship vs another. I can’t even remember the last time I saw someone look forward to the release of an Android tablet.

The Nexus 9 seemed like it was going to be killer, but it was plagued with poor build-quality and performance issues. The Nexus 7 line was inexplicably killed after being the most successful Nexus device ever.

And then you’ve got Samsung with an absurdly large variety of release-them-and-forget-about-them Galaxy Tabs.

Are we going to see a resurgence of tablets in Android? I know the Pixel C is on the horizon, but that device seems too large and niche to really appeal to an average tablet user.

For me, I think I basically just want to see a refreshed Nexus 9 without all the issues.

Interesting replies at that reddit thread.

Makes me think there will be iPad as the sole remaining tablet.

Not that that isn’t happening right now anyway.

Industry watchers said Samsung Electronics is expected to fire up to 30 percent of its workers as it cuts back on the role of those who work in finance, human resources and marketing.

Ambiguous sentence structure. Thirty percent of all workers, or thirty percent in just those three areas?

I’ll repeat what I’ve said previously: With tablet sales declining, I think the current round of Galaxy Tab S2 are the last to come out of Samsung.

We’ll see well-known brand names abandon the Android tablet market and leave it all to the bottom-feeders who import generic crap from China and slap a brand name on them. That will further poison the iPad market too.

Last year I would have seen this as an opportunity for China brands to break into the American market. But if a giant corporation like Hisense won’t sell their Sero 8 Pro here, you can forget microscopic “cottage” companies like Teclast, Onda, CUBE, or Chuwi ever getting here.

Nook Glowlight Plus Rooting Notes #6

No root yet, but some very interesting developments over at XDA Developers.

I’m surprised I was the first to report about accessing Developer Options. It turns out Renate didn’t even know that!

I wrote here:

2) I haven’t seen this elsewhere: Tapping three times on Software Version will open up Developer Options! There’s a bloody ton of stuff in there.

And at XDA, yegoshin confirms:

Yep after registering and going through to the main nook screen >> settings >> about >> software >> tap software version rapidly like 10 times >> tap the build number (or maybe it was something else I forgot) rapidly 10 times or so. At the bottom you get Development Options where you can enable USB debugging etc…

Well, two things:

1) It works on demo Nooks at B&N.

2) You don’t — or at least I didn’t — have to tap ten times. I found that just two or three will do on Software Version. That will reveal another set of menu options on the same screen and then scrolling down will show Developer Options. Tap that and BOOM! All the options!
