Shallots Metal: Six-Inch Screen, 4GB RAM, 128GB Storage. US$312!

$312 Shallots Metal launched with SD810, 4GB RAM and 128GB storage

Taking up the position of flagship is a 6-inch model with 2K (2560 x 1440) display. This larger model only costs 1999 Yuan yet packs similar hardware to the LeTV Le Max phone.

Shallots have opted for a Snapdragon 810 chipset, 4GB RAM, 128GB memory card (and space for an SD card), 8 mega-pixel front camera and 16 mega-pixel rear with F2.0 aperture, PDAF, 6p stack lens and 4K video.

Wow. All China phone companies need to do is incorporate worldwide bands and people will flock to order the damn things.

Yesterday, I discovered B&H Photo is selling the Axon phone. I got to play with it a bit. Premium build of classy metal (although even in the store, that metal was cold!). Great screen. Acceptable camera, for the most part. 32GB and 64GB storage models. What kills it is the lack of microSD card slot. And despite the design, there’s really only one small speaker on the front, not two providing stereo. Even the 32GB model is priced higher than this Shallots Metal six-incher. Axon would get killed by it.

I also got to finally see the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 (again at B&H). The screen is just too small.

And, also at B&H, the ZTE Zmax 2. The screen was dim compared to others. It seemed nice but the price was too high for what it offers. And after the way ZTE abandoned the original Zmax, it casts a shadow over this and the Axon too.

No matter what phone I fondle, I keep coming back to the Huawei Ascend Mate 2. It makes me lust for it. Despite its 20K AnTuTu score, it does Google Books PDFs just swell using SmartQ Reader. B&H keeps playing Whack-A-Mole with the price. US$219 one week, US$239 at post time, a Black Friday special at US$199. I keep hoping for another pre-holiday drop to US$199 (or less!). We’ll see.

Finally, I played with the Boost Mobile version of the LG G Stylo again. Do not buy it! Its paltry 1GB of RAM is used so badly that it can’t even download a Google Books PDF beyond a certain size. This phone is worthless.
