Kobo Touch Beats iPad

Mini-Review: Why I’m putting down iPad, and reaching for Kobo

Soon, however, I found myself reading less and less on iPad, and then not at all. Why? iPad has too many other distractions. I could surf the Web, play Scrabble, read email, play Scrabble, check baseball scores, play Scrabble, watch a movie, play Scrabble, write, play Scrabble, play Scrabble — did I mention I liked to play Scrabble?

And:

It finally dawned on me that all I wanted from an e-reading device was to read books.

Kobo Overhauls Desktop, Accepts Borders Gift Cards

Kobo released a “critical update” (that’s what the dialog box called it) to its desktop software yesterday.

I found out about it today, when I coincidentally launched the software to see if there was an update.

Kobo has done a major overhaul of its desktop software.

Chickenshit Behavior From Corporate Giants

As everyone knows, yesterday was June 30th. The deadline for iOS apps to remove their buttons that lead to their websites where transactions can take place.

Everyone has been waiting for Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo to announce changes to their apps to bring them into compliance with Apple’s restrictions.

So far, no one has said anything.

So while Apple, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo play Chicken with one another, to see who blinks first, customers are trapped in a limbo between them.

Where the hell do the words customer service come into this?

All of these companies pride themselves on doing what’s right for their customers (well, mostly).

Where the hell are their commitments to that today?

They play Chicken. Their customers eat chickenshit.

Tomorrow Is The Apple Deadline For eBooks

I see I’m not the only one who remembers!

At post time, no word on changes by Amazon to its Kindle app, Barnes & Noble to its Nook app, or Kobo to its app.

Why are they all making their customers sweat like this?

It’s Time To Dump Adobe eBook DRM

Do any of you understand the contortions two of the major eBook players undergo in order to avoid Adobe DRM?

Kobo’s eReader does not download an ePub file to the device. It downloads a file into an SQLite database.

Barnes & Noble’s Nook devices hide the eBook partition from the user. It cannot be seen by plugging into a PC.

Why do these two companies do this?

Photo: Kobo Touch Versus Nook Touch

Click = big

Man, that Nook is just so fugly next to that Kobo.

Photo is from here. Even though he won’t let people use the Flickr Blog Publish feature, he still allows downloading. So, downloading to me = go ahead and embed anyway.

YouTube: Kobo eReader Touch Review

Kobo apparently pushed out their firmware update to their new Touch device. eInk page refresh delay is now an option, as you’ll see in the video after the break.

Very noticeable is that the device is more responsive and seems snappy compared to the very early videos. The browser slays the one on the Nook Touch too — and it can download ePubs!

Kobo Touch Owner Reports

People over at the MobileRead forums are now reporting on their Kobo Touch ownership.

1) It has a web browser. See my separate post about it.

2) The Kobo Touch can read non-DRMed MobiPocket books! I missed this news when it was introduced with the Kobo WiFi. Hm, buying books from Amazon and some wizardry with Calibre can make this a kinda, sorta Kindle too, without having to root it like a Nook Touch. Note that Kindle books would have to be sideloaded via USB cable.
