Nell Cutter’s White Elephants, A Story By Bess Streeter Aldrich

Note: I usually skip the fiction in The American Magazine. But I read the first paragraph of this and was sucked right in. It’s a delightful story with a wonderful economy of words. It’s also available as an ePub eBook at Google Docs — with original page images intact — for those who want to read it offline.

An Experiment In ePub eBooks

Two posts have been massively popular this week:

1922: Follow This Rule — If You Want To Be Popular

1922: Why I Quit Being So Accommodating

I decided to run both through the dotEPUB Firefox Add-on and turn them into ePub eBooks for people to download via Google Docs.

The first essay includes the original images.

The second one lacks the images due to dotEPUB having an image limit.

Download here:

Google Docs: 1922: Follow This Rule — If You Want To Be Popular

Google Docs: 1922: Why I Quit Being So Accommodating

When the Google Docs screen appears, click on File and then Download to grab each one.

I’d be interested to hear from people who view them on tablets. I won’t be doing additional work on these eBooks. This is just an experiment. People who balked at reading them online might want to try them via these eBooks now.

So What’s The Temperature Today Then?

This was a Scheduled Post created on March 16, 2012, for delayed publishing on this date.

Maclean’s magazine had this cover:

I’m wondering how that played out. It’s now Winter 2012.

So what’s that temperature like outside?
