This is a bit of a bombshell. Xiaomi has been developing iOS software for the MiBand!
The revealing Weibo communiqué:
The Xiaomi MiBand can work with any Android phone or tablet. The only feature that’s exclusive to Xiaomi phones is the ability to unlock a phone using the MiBand. Otherwise, all of the other functions of the MiBand can be used by the software on any Android phone or tablet.
Now it seems that Xiaomi intends to expand the market for the MiBand beyond Android to iOS.
Given that Xiaomi just invested US$25M in iHealth, a company whose devices have even been sold in Apple Stores, it seems they intend to be expansive in their health initiative.
The MiBand is a basic health monitoring wristband that sells for the equivalent of under US$15.
Aside from measuring steps, it also monitors sleep and can vibrate as a wake-up alarm.
The MiBand’s low price is an inexpensive way for people to satisfy their curiosity about these gadgets without feeling any buyer’s remorse. It’s also a robust little piece of technology that survived some extreme testing.
Now if only Xiaomi would start selling it outside of China!
